Post & News
The post was very
efficient in Victorian London. Post was delivered up to 12
times daily, or 6 times in more residential areas, Monday to
Saturday. It was quite easy to send a dinner invitation in
the morning post and receive a reply by early
afternoon.
Also, sending and receiving letters was cheap. In England in 1830, postage was calculated by the number of pages and the distance between the sender and recipient. It was paid for by the recipient. The cost of a letter having just a few pages could easily equal a days wages for a person of middling income. But by the early 1840's both England and the United States had adopted a flat fee for letters regardless of the distance or number of pages. Dark Radiance Postal System The Post system at Dark Radiance consists of a single post box outside the general store, @ 101 Dreary Lane. If you would like to send someone a letter, create a note card with the contents of your message. Name the note with the full Avatar name of the recipient, followed by a colon and then the subject of your note. Finally, drop that note into the postbox. For example, to send a letter to an avatar named "John Glason" with the subject "Dinner Invitation", create a note card named "John Glason: Dinner Invitation" in your inventory, Edit the note card to contain the information you want. Remember this is the Victorian period writing is a bit formal compared to modern times. Finally, drop the note card on the post box. To receive post for your Avatar, go to the post box and "touch" it. If you have any letters they will be sent to you in a folder named "post"; otherwise you will receive a chat message that you have no letters. Please be sure to check the post box often or your will not receive any post. Note: You can send post to the Dark Radiance staff by addressing it to "Staff" rather than an avatar name. Note from Digit: As a scripter, I looked at creating a bot or path-finding enabled object to determine how easy it would be to script a postman. It seems possible, but I do not have the time to take on that project at this time. I hope that the existing postal system I have created will work well for roleplay at Dark Radiance. Newspapers With the rise of literacy and the huge technological advances in printing presses, weekly and daily newspapers became very popular in the mid to late Victorian era. Many different newspapers were published during this time, giving the upper class and middle class numerous options. Near the end of the Victorian era, even the lower class had affordable newspapers from a variety of publishers. Like today, Victorian newspapers each had their own partisan slant and often had a fair share of yellow journalism. It is hoped that Dark Radiance will publish a weekly paper that contains the relevant news for this dark time and of events about the Dark Radiance area. |
