Roleplay Titlers

A titler is an object that creates hovering text above your avatar's head.  It often includes a meter name, a character name and some lines of informational text.

The meter name is often used to insure that all the role players are using the same meter or HUD.  A character name is often part of a titler as people often roleplay with a different name that their avatar.  Remember that just because the titler shows a characters name, does not mean that your character has met that player and knows their name.

The other information displayed in a titler is used to convey clues about a character that are not readily apparent from looking at an avatar. They are also used convey information that Second Life
™ is not able to due to various limitations.  Titler's should never be used to display information that is hidden to the senses or is in any way non-obvious.

Things to think about including in a titler:
  • Sight, clues to the appearance of a character. Many things cannot clearly be displayed on a Second Life Avatar easily, a limp, a bruised face, etc.  These things can be just role played, but sometime it's just easier to put it into ONE place.
  • Sound, clues to how a character talks, moves, etc. If your character has a specific accent putting it in the titler can be much easier that "typing" out the accent phonetically.
  • Smell, give clues to how a character smells, their daily hygiene, etc. Giving a clue as to how a character smells is helpful since the character is role playing with characters that have heightened senses of smell, like vampires and lycans.
  • Supernatural qualities that have physical manifestation. This type of clue is for obvious qualities, like a visible aura, feels good / creepy to be near, etc.
Things not to include in a titler:
  • is xxx years old
  • Statistics like health, armor class, strength, etc.
  • Generally rude or obnoxious comments
  • Irrelevant information
  • Has knife in pocket (a non-obvious item)
  • Is a vampire, lycan, witch, fae, etc.
The list of items above include examples of meta-gaming by giving information away that is not readily apparent, what type of creature a character is, how strong the character is, etc.

Examples of good titler information:
  • has a slight limp
  • has a bad rash and boils on the skin
  • smells of blood
  • exudes feeling of menace
  • shows a faint purple aura
  • produces a feeling of calmness
  • has a slight tremble to the touch
  • speaks with broken English
  • has a hoarse wheezing voice
