Forms of Address

General Forms of Address
Everyone has a first name and surname, however the first name (or Christian name), is reserved for people who are closely related or intimate. Even then a christian name is often used only in private. Of course there are many exception to this.
  • in general prefer to use a persons title and surname in public.  At times you may need to use a person's title, their first name, and last name to distinguish them.  Imagine addressing two brothers named "Robert Hayward" and "Philip Hayward", using just Mr. Hayward is ambiguous, so using "Mr. Robert Hayward" or "Mr. Philip Hayward" would make sense.  Sometimes among close associates this might be shortened to "Mr. Robert" or "Mr. Philip".
  • close male friends typically refer to one another by surname only.  Think of Sherlock Holmes always calling Dr. John Watson by "Watson".
  • close female friends typically refer to one another by first name only.
  • addressing children is very similar.  In school, boys are addressed by their last name by the school staff unless additional disambiguation is needed.  Girls were generally addressed by their first name by school staff.
  • in public a wife would refer to her husband as Mr. Hayward or perhaps just Hayward as an example.  Only in private would she call him by his first name or some special nickname.
  • in public a man would refer to his wife as Mrs. Hayward and only in private would he use her first name or a special nickname.
