Vampire Basics

Dark Radiance allows Vampire characters in roleplay.  The vampires here are loosely based on the roleplay game Vampire: The Masquerade.  The intention is not to force all the rules and behaviours that are described in VTM, but to give players a rich set of information a player can draw from.  Some of the general concepts presented in the game are used.

Who are the Vampires?
Vampires are humans that have been turned into undead creatures that are sustained by blood. Once becoming a vampire, that person does not physically age they remain looking very similar to how they looked when they were turned.  Vampires have strong predatory instincts and powerful urges to feed. These feeling urges do no diminish as time goes by.  Most often a newly turned vampire goes through a feeding frenzy, followed by a time of remorse and isolation, and finally walks into the sun and destroys themselves. Only vampires of strong character survive.
What do vampires look like?
The appearance of a vampire depends on two things.  If they are well fed and have no injuries, they will look human (mostly).  If they are injured and or poorly fed, a vampire will look more undead.

Normal vampire appearance:
  • looks like they were before being turned
  • may have a pale apprentice (depends on skin colour in life)
  • has enlarged canine teeth
  • cooler than normal body temperature
When Severely Injured or Very Hungry:
  • appears cadaverous, sunken cheeks, little muscle...
  • very blood shot eyes
  • cold to the touch
  • washed out / corpse like skin coloration
Just after feeding:
  • warm to the touch (at least human body temperature)
  • flushed
Note: Over time a vampire's skin colour becomes more and more washed out and pale.

Allowed Features / Looks etc.
  • Skin tones of any normal human and lighter.  Skin with visible veining is allowed within reason.
  • Sharp nails as long are they are within reason
  • Fangs, but no huge ones please  (remember you are still under the masquerade)

Features / Looks Not Allowed**
  • Fangs that extend way over the lips. (If these can be hidden or disguised in public that is acceptable)
  • Extremely pointed ears (covering these with a hat or scarf is acceptable)
  • Face covered in blood  (unless appropriate for the roleplay)
  • Glowing or obviously non-human eyes (Note that you can cover these with glasses and that is acceptable)
  • No child avatars
** Vampires that do not easily pass as human in public places will be questioned about their odd looks.  Be prepared to roleplay this if you avatar looks non-human.
Vampire Weaknesses
  • Undead - A vampire is one of the undead.  They do not need to breathe except to speak, they do not need to eat, blink their eyes, shift their limbs over time, go to the lo, etc.  If  a vampire does not do these human things when they are in public, someone will eventually notice. (excellent opportunity for some good dice rolls)
  • Must consume Blood - A vampires MUST feed on blood to continue their existence.  If they do not feed often, they will begin to loose many of their strengths, begin to appear less human, and finally fall into a hibernation like state.
  • Despite the fact that vampires are immune to illness and disease, any substances in the blood that a vampire consumes can effect them for a period of time.  Drugs, alcohol, or poisons, in the blood of a victim will cause the vampire to feel the effects of those substances.
  • Silver Allergy - Vampires have a severe allergy to silver in any form. Any contact with silver causes burn like reactions.  Prolonged contact can disfigure the vampire for many, many years, cause diminished regeneration, etc.
  • Sunlight - The ultraviolet light of the sun is harmful to vampires. Brief exposure directly on the skin causes burn like reactions.  Normal precautions to protect oneself from the sun like gloves, hats, umbrellas, etc are effective for short periods of time. Extended exposure can disfigure and even destroy a vampire.
Vampire Strengths
  • Undead - Vampires are effectively immortal.  They are not alive, but they will not naturally die of old age.  As long as a vampire keeps feeding , they will continue to exist as undead.  Vampires can die from excessive injury, excessive exposure to the sun and other methods.
  • Regeneration / Rapid Healing - Vampires heal from damage very quickly and almost always completely with no loss of function.  Vampires are not subject to disease or illness.  A vampire will heal fastest if they have recently fed.  If a vampire has gone an extended period without feeding, their regeneration capability will be very slow.  Note that a vampire can be killed if the injuries are severe enough. (think total dis-membership, beheading, etc.)
**Note The other vampire abilities your player has is determined by the bloodline of your sire. See Vampire Clans for more information.
